Jira: Applicable to a World outside of Software Engineering
Jira is increasingly used outside Atlassian’s traditional targeted market of Software Engineering. At Blended Perspectives, it is also our key tool for our strategic planning, customer relationship management and book keeping processes. These are all areas nothing to do with developing software. At a current engagement for Canadian insurance institution, we are extending our Jira-based Project and Portfolio Management methodology and templates. Our aim is to simplify their laborious Microsoft Excel based process into a dynamically and automatically generated dashboard in Jira.
However after a decade of development there are few if any tracking, workflow and process issues that Jira can’t address. It can be put to such diverse uses because underneath it is an extremely versatile database, workflow engine and time tracking system. Atlassian has a heritage in using those capabilities to drive productivity in software teams. These same capabilities can be used in many industries.
Technically-minded teams love Jira because it lets them capture the detail that they need and keeps their users in-the-loop. This is also because it has powerful reporting capabilities. These can also show management progress and highlight what needs to be focused on.
