Healthy Leadership Teams can make or break an organization, but what characteristics should they have?
As part of the the Atlassian Team Health Check toolkit, research was conducted to identify eight healthy leadership teams characteristics:
- Shared understanding
- Value based metrics
- Decision Making
- Managed Dependencies
- One pager

Lets discuss the concept of balance though in this first instalment about leadership. Atlassian’s view of “balance” is that the team has the right people. Each team member should also know what is expected of them.
- Team roles are explicit,
- Clear accountability
- Team size is not too large
The key technique Atlassian suggests is that teams score themselves based on these characteristics – thumbs up, thumbs down and thumb neutral. Therefore the suggestion is that the team adopts various team plays to assist in the addressing of any issues. One of them is adopting a DACI template. The DACI abbreviation has been expanded on below:
It is clear to see that balance plays a key role in any healthy leadership team, however, it is important to remember that this is only one of eight characteristics.
